MOORE HOPE PLAZA

rainbow697nc.png

Moore Hope Plaza is located at one of the busiest and most popular intersections in Oakland's Lakeshore LGBTQ cultural district, at the corner of Lakeshore and Lake Park and serves as the main entry point into the district.

THE NAME

Peggy Moore and Hope Wood were a married lesbian couple who lived in Oakland and were beloved community organizers and advocates. They both tragically lost their lives in a car accident in San Diego County in May of 2024. Moore Hope Plaza marks the first time that a plaza has been named in honor of any LGBTQ community members in Oakland and is a first to be named for queer women of color in the state of California.

THE HISTORY

After the couple's death, the leadership at the Oakland LGBTQ Community Center and The Lakeshore LGBTQ Cultural District, wanted to memorialize Peggy and Hope in a way that was connected to the community in a neighborhood that they frequented and loved. At a speech during Oakland Pride in 2024, congresswoman Lateefah Simon implored us to remember how Peggy and Hope inspired us all to have more joy, more love, more hope. That speech resonated with Center co-founders Joe Hawkins and Jeff Myers and they set out to name the Plaza in memorium of Peggy and Hope. Cultural district founding committee member Brandon Hirami, Council Member at-large Rowena Brown and District 2 city council woman Charlene Wang helped to push the naming of the plaza forward and on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the Oakland City Council voted unanimously to name the plaza at Lakeshore and Lake Park, Moore Hope Plaza.

The Official dedication ceremony was held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 the week leading to the Oakland Pride Parade & Festival.
