A Cultural District, as outlined by the California Arts Council, is a well-defined geographic area with a high concentration of cultural resources and activities. It highlights the cultural legacy of California's most valuable resource—its diversity.
A Cultural District is a way to uplift local communities, residents, and business in positive, collective way; it also helps bring everyone together to identify problems and opportunities available within the district to determine the future of our community and city.
Lakeshore LGBTQ Cultural District is the first official LGBTQ cultural district and neighborhood in Oakland!
This district will promote business development and foster a community where every Oakland resident and visitor can feel safe to exist free and proud. With the Oakland metropolitan area having one of the highest percentages of LGBTQ-identified residents in the United States, this cultural district is long overdue.
The proposed district will uplift and preserve the legacy of Oakland's rich LGBTQ history, including the struggle for justice and equity — a much-needed response to the recent attacks on LGBTQ citizens and rights nationwide.
There are many ways to get involved with Lakeshore LGBTQ Cultural District, such as volunteering, making a donation, or attending one of our events.
