Established by the city of Oakland in November of 2023, the Lakeshore LGBTQ Cultural District is the only city government designated LGBTQ district in the entire East Bay. The Lakeshore LGBTQ district has a multi-block, triangular shaped boundary that includes Lake Park Ave, Lakeshore Ave, Grand Ave and stretches back to Mandana.

 

The Lakeshore LGBTQ Cultural District is located at the northwest corner of Lake Merritt, where Grand Avenue and Lakeshore Avenue pass under Interstate 580.

A recent exclusive analysis by the website NeighborhoodScout, revealed that Oakland's Lakeshore Cultural District and Lake Merritt neighborhoods have a greater concentration of same sex couples than 95.9% of all neighborhoods in the United States. 

 

The Lakeshore/Grand Lake district has a long history of LGBTQ residents and of welcoming the LGBTQ community and is Oakland's most ethnically diverse and visibly LGBTQ inclusive destination neighborhood. The district features rainbow progressive banners throughout the district, a thermal-plastic rainbow crosswalk, a 40-foot flagpole with a giant LGBTQ progressive flag, LGBTQ non-profit support services to include the Oakland LGBTQ Community Center, Town Queer Youth Club, Queer Arts Center, Glenn Burke Wellness Clinic, More Hope Plaza, and the Lakeshore Lavender Lounge.
